Does the word braces create a picture in your mind of a teenager with a mouth overstuffed with metal? That may have been how it was in the bad old days, but braces are a very different thing today.
Which is good, particularly for any adults who feel that they’ve missed their opportunity to get the smile they’ve always wanted instead of the crooked teeth they have.
So, while orthodontic treatments are often imagined to only be appropriate for children and teenagers, in fact they are also appropriate and effective for adults as well. Adult orthodontic treatments are extremely effective in correcting crooked teeth, overbites, and all manner of other oral problems in more mature patients.
At EK Dental Surgery, there’s no age limit on orthodontics!
Benefits of Adult Braces Treatment
Adult orthodontic treatment can dramatically improve your personal appearance and self-esteem. Improving the health of your teeth and gums is just as important as improving their aesthetics. When you have a crossbite or misaligned teeth, you have an increased chance of plaque and food buildup between your teeth. This means you may get periodontal disease or gum disease.
Braces can help you avoid tooth decay, gum and bone loss, irregular wear of the tooth enamel, and TMJ/TMD pain (or chronic facial discomfort).
Some adults are hesitant to undergo the treatment because they think orthodontic braces are not appropriate for their age or they don’t want other people notice them wearing them. But braces have evolved. The brackets used today are smaller, and the bands that wrap around the tooth are no longer used. There are also braces that are virtually invisible. Today, wearing braces is less painful, requires less time, and is far less noticeable.
At EK Dental, our adult brace patients are almost uniformly ecstatic that they made the commitment to correct their teeth.
Here Are The Most Popular Braces Options For Adults:
What they are: An update on conventional metal-mouth gear, ceramic braces are brackets affixed to the teeth. Apparently, when Tom Cruise got braces a few years ago (check out his pictures online!), he wore ceramic braces.
Pros: Made of translucent or tooth-coloured material, ceramic brackets are more subtle than metal. The brackets can also come with a tooth-coloured wire, making them blend in with your teeth that much better.
Cons: While the brackets are translucent, the ligatures are usually latex, which can stain, so the braces are not invisible. Translucent doesn’t mean entirely clear; ceramics could make extremely-white teeth look a little bit darker.
What they are: An at-first-glance-invisible option consisting of wires and metal brackets customized to fit the inside of your teeth. Like all non-removable treatments, they’re best suited to people with moderate to severe crowding or spaces between the teeth.
Pros: Because the hardware is on the back of your teeth, they’re invisible when you smile.
Cons: They tend to be more expensive than regular braces, and they’re difficult to install as well as keep clean. They can cause tongue discomfort, and they make speech a little tricky.
What they are: A series of clear, molded plastic upper- and lower-teeth trays that fit your teeth through each straightening stage, which is about two weeks per set. The number of trays, or “aligners,” depends on how much straightening you need.
Pros: These braces are mostly undetectable. Because they’re a smooth plastic, they shouldn’t irritate the insides of your mouth. They’re simple to clean, partly because you have to remove them before eating, and because they’re removable, you can brush and floss without issue.
Cons: Not for folks with major straightening needs. These are also the most costly braces.
The Benefits of Wearing Adult Braces
Like younger patients, adults can benefit from orthodontic care. Though the result is not as quick as with cosmetic dental procedures, you can be sure that once it’s complete, the result is truly worth it. With adult braces, you can have:
- A beautiful, straighter smile, which makes you look and feel good every time you show off your perfectly aligned teeth.
- Improved self-confidence as the treatment brings your teeth, lips and face into proportion, which makes you feel good about the way you look.
- Better dental health and function. Orthodontic treatments are meant to improve your bite and the function of your jaw. With straighter teeth, you can improve your dental care and prevent common oral health issues.
- Assistance of dental restorative treatment. Dental braces can enhance the results of restorative dental work such as dental implants.
